Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is an idiot!
He is quoted today on www.imdb.com on their movie and tv news Tue 10 April 2007 celebrity news, it's on the left side of their home page, talking about his role as King Henry VIII on the show saying:
"You're trying to sell a historical period drama to a country like America, you don't want a big, fat, 250 pounds, red haired guy with a beard. It doesn't let people embrace the fantastic monarch he was, because they're not attracted to the package. Heroes do not look like Henry VIII. That is just not the world we live in." Are you kidding me! That is absolutely outrageous! First of all I guess no American man or woman is 250 pounds, has red hair or for you guys has a beard! . What does that have to do with anything? And "heroes do not look like that", what about Police Officers, Fire Fighters, and Teachers just to name a few, you mean to tell me not one of them is possibly 250 pounds, has red hair and/or a beard? OUTRAGEOUS!!!! What do you think?
The Tudors-Jonathan Rhys-Meyers?
You're retarded. What he meant was that Henry was good looking when he was young. He is playing that role. Not the fat, used up monarch Henry was in later years.
The Tudors-Jonathan Rhys-Meyers?
Well I would not exactly call you retarded - but you did miss the point. The Tudors is focusing on Henry VIII as a young monarch and not the man he became in his later years. I am sure that for entertainment value - history has been slightly altered but for the most part - it is a good series so far.
The Tudors-Jonathan Rhys-Meyers?
What he meant was--that in America on TV--sex sells. Good looking people are what we want to watch--and it's not just Americans.
If we wanted to watch a 250 guy lust after women and run around with his top off--which the character of Henry does in the 2 episodes of The Tudors I watched---there would be more heavy set guys and women for that matter on TV.
America is obsessed with thinness--even though many of us are not thin--we are average. If we weren't so obsessed with thinness, then the diet industry wouldn't be making billions of dollars selling diet products, models would be out of jobs, and there wouldn't be so many young girls who have eating disorders.
I think that he hit the nail on the head.
